The Return of the Jolly Boy's in Hamberg
A few regulars and Paul headed off to Hamberg... and no, Liverpool weren't playing. Instead they were going in search of some dancers to work the bar at the Jolly Sailor, but did they find any...
The Winter Festival called 'Dom' was taking place in the city, so it was merry go rounds and candy floss all round! A good weekend was had by all, just a shame that the weekly Sunday morning fish market was just that, a fish market.
On every other early Sunday morning the fish hall formed an integral part of a night out in Hamburg with free flowing beer and live bands, but unfortunately this particular Sunday was 'Dead Sunday', so not a drop of beer or twang of a guitar in sight.
Halloween
Darkness falls across the land, the midnite hour is close at hand.
Creatures crawl in search of blood, to terrorize yawls neighbourhood.
And whosoever shall be found, without the soul for getting down.
Must stand and face the hounds of hell, and rot inside a corpses shell.
The foulest stench is in the air, the funk of forty thousand years and grizzy ghouls, From every tomb are closing in to seal your doom.
And though you fight to stay alive, your body starts to shiver.
For no mere mortal can resist the evil of the jolly Sailor on Haloween.
Ha ha ha ha hooooooooooooooowl
3rd Annual Conker Fight
The 3rd annual Jolly Sailor conker fight took place last Saturday, 11th October.
This year’s collection of the nuts from horse chestnut trees was very difficult due to the current credit crunch, or some other disease. However, thanks to Xabi the pub dog, conkers were successfully scoured from far a field and healthy amount were collected.
Due to a lovely and clear Autumnal night, the conker fight took place in the Jolly garden and involved a large number of participants including a handful of new customers.
This year, it was the ladies who did particularly well with many getting through to the play offs. However the final was played out between Phil (all In) Knibbs and Colin, who finished as runner up last year. But alas, it was to be runner up again for Colin as Phil emerged as Jolly Sailor Conker Champion 2008, picking up the prestigious certificate and a gallon of beer in the process.
Mexican Night
Ariba ariba … everyone hurried along to the Jolly Sailor on Saturday night for the pub’s annual Mexican night. Lots of regulars made the effort to dress up, so it was ponchos, moustaches and sombreros all round with chilli and tequila the order of the day.
To add some extra spice to the evening (as if the chilli wasn’t hot enough) was the Jolly version of Russian Roulette - ‘Mexican Roulette' using a toy gun to fire caps and the losers being delivered with a shot of tequila.
After the pub closed (and once Owen had finished the chilli), it was down to Adelaide’s to finish the night off, but all Amigos were safely back in their bunks by 5am.
Chief goes to Marseille
Only a couple of weeks after Liege, it was back on the road for your travelling landlord - this time to watch the Mighty Reds take on French side Marseille.
The round thing in the sky called the sun put in a welcome appearance, so travelling fans were in high spirits. Before the match it was a quick sightseeing tour of the area .. to the Roman amphitheatre in Nimes, which resembled Rome .. (a lucky omen perhaps?!) and also to the famous medieval bridge in Avignon 'Pont d'Avignon', whose arches collapsed in the 1600's .. or were they robbed by the Scousers ...?
Despite a shaky start Liverpool managed a 2-1 victory, courtesy of two Stevie G goals, so where next for your landlord?
Jem's Old Skool Ravers Party
A good night was had by all (customers, staff and Xabi, the pub dog) at Jeremy's Old Skool Ravers party. As in true Jolly style dressing up was welcomed - with Nat and Nicola needing no encouragement!!
Jolly golf outing to Bournemouth
The Jolly Sailor Golf Society headed off for their 2nd annual weekend away to Bournemouth... although each year the amount of golf that gets played is reduced considerably!
The weekend got off to a good start though with the players arriving at the Canford Magne golf course in Bournemouth in high spirits, that was until the 7th -9th holes when the heavens opened and rain stopped play ... for the rest of the day! After enjoying a few jars in the local watering holes, it was back to the hotel for some sleep in preparation for the second day of golf!!
However, as it was still pouring down with rain in the morning, the decision was made to call off the golf .. only for the sun to come out a few hours later. But as true golf professionals, the group decided they should still take out their clubs and enjoy a round on one of Bournemouth's crazy golf courses! Geoff Kirby emerged victorious (despite omen-child Damien, who insisted on whacking balls all around the place and calling everyone idiots!).
In the evening it was off out to watch the exciting(!) England qualifier and then the lengthy(!) Khan fight!
All in all, another great weekend away, although thoughts are already circulating about whether it's worth taking golf clubs next year!
On the Road Again
As another European campaign for Liverpool began, so did that of your travelling landlord!
Paul headed off to Belgium to watch Liverpool take on Standard Liege, winners of last years Belgian league. The rough ferry crossing was quickly forgotten as Paul was soon amongst fellow Liverpool fans enjoying a pint of the local brew in the market square. Let’s hope there will be plenty more trips to Europe ahead.
The draw for the group stage of the Champions League will take place on Thursday, 28th August.
The Pub re-opens for business
Opening Day
On Saturday 5th July the new and improved Jolly Sailor re-opened after a month of refurbishment. Although a few bodies managed to sneak in on the Friday evening, it was Saturday when the pub fully opened. With a great new pool area, extended lounge bar, larger outside patio, 3 extra draught lagers and 4 real ales and lots of other key new features, regulars and newcomers alike were amazed and hopefully impressed with their new pub.
Official Opening Party
After having a few days to iron out some teething problems, the Jolly Sailor had it's official opening party on Thursday 10th July. The staff, complete with their new Bombardier shirts, served directors and staff from the brewery, members of CAMRA, local residents and of course the Jolly regulars.
A great night was had by all, the future of the pub looks very Jolly!
