The Jolly Wheelers
We describe ourselves as "a bunch of drinkers with a cycling
problem". We're named the Jolly Wheelers because of our
affiliation with the Jolly Sailor pub. Every Thursday evening through
Summer, we cycle from the Jolly Sailor to the Jolly Sailor passing
through Codicote & Whitwell - and in mid summer when light allows,
we venture further - to Hitchin & often Hexton. We often do a
ride on Sunday mornings too.
We undertake an annual charity ride - which usually involves Italy,
and is often a coast to coast ride - this is very popular &
over-subscribed. Last year's ride took us on a trip around parts
of Sicily. The Herts Advertiser picked up on the fact that one of
our number - Ross Mallinson - recovered from being involved in the
July 7th bombings, to regain enough fitness & to cycle with
us (click
here for link).
Sometimes we do some extra "stuff" - Four of us are off
to France to climb Alpe D'Huez & Mount Ventoux this month, and
there's an annual outing to Boulogne.
We are currently all blokes (not that any of us are thinking of
changing our orientation - just that any girl cyclists
would be very welcome) - and most of us are between 40-50 (though
there are some younger lads amongst us). If you are a cyclist &
want to get in touch, e-mail us
jollywheelers-subscribe@yahoogroups.co.uk or .. you know where
to find us on Thursday nights - we're the ones in the lycra attire
!
Jolly Wheelers on Tour (23/10/06)
Diary of our Very Own Cyclists in Italy
We packed the bikes and left St Albans at 03.00 hrs on Wednesday
morning 27th September 2006.
We had a "Full English Breakfast" on the coach ( 2 Crates
of Bombardier !) and checked in at Stansted Airport
at 04.10 hrs.
We arrived at Lamezia Terme in Calabria ( Ryanair ) at 10.30 am,
assembled the bikes and proudly put on our
Charles Wells jerseys ready for the start of this year's C2C. After
only 1 hour Cycling south from Lamezia we
arrived at Pizzo where we were greated by tumultuous applause as
we entered the Centro Storico.
We arrived at Tropea on the South West Coast
of Calabria & "dipped our wheels" in the Mediterranean
denoting the start of this year's C2C.
Look close & you'll see the Volcanic Island of Stromboli in
the distance.
With Best Wishes to all at the jolly
