Revenge of the Conker

Jolly Sailor Conker Fight (12/10/07)
Following England's emphatic win on Saturday night, every one was in high spirits for the annual Jolly Sailor conker fight. Jason started will with a couple of wins, as did Terry and Ian. It was good to see both regulars and newcomers taking part, but unfortunately there was no sign of Vic, last years champ ... was he too scared of the competition?
Congratulations to Ian, who beat Terry in the grand final. With just the one hit, it was all over and Terry's conker fell to pieces!

Bikini's, bananas and bad hoola hooping
Bank Holiday Fun at the Jolly Sailor Beach Party

It may have been pouring with rain outside, but it was all summer fun in the Jolly on Sunday evening. The hoola hoop competition was interesting to say the least, with everyone put to shame by an 11 year old. A free drink was offered to anyone keeping the hoola hoop up for 1minute - this was soon reduced to 30 seconds. Swin and Erica battled it out on the floor, but it was Erica who got into the rhythym and lasted for more than 30 seconds. Meanwhile in the limbo competition, there were lots of entrants with regulars and newcomers alike taking to the floor. The first signs were that Liam would win the presitigous title as he looked as though he did the limbo daily. But in the finally round, it was his Phoenix team Jack, that showed amazing bendability and won the competition.

Final Dream Team Table

Following a short break away, the Jolly Sailor Dreamteam is back with the final table of the season. And congratulations goes to Graham Roberts, who's team QPR All Stars finished with 1729 points, just 10 points above The Shipwrekers, managed by David Rice. Pauls team F.C. Chiefs finished in third, 5 places above the landlady's team 'Bayer Eggers'. Elsewhere in the league, Chelsea may have won the Carling and FA Cups, but Celery FC, managed by Richard Greener, could only manage a meagre 1046 points, which confirmed their place at rock bottom of the league.

Up, Up and Away - 20 May '07
Charity Sky Dive

Following a late night beverage, Jolly Sailor landlady managed to persuade 4 willing punters (mugs) to jump out of a plane ... 8 months later and the day had arrived. Joining Heather were Steve, Jeremy, Lisa and Sarah - also celebrating her 21st birthday. Jumping for local cancer hospice 'Grove House', the group managed to drum up alot of support and have raised over £1000 for the charity (exact amount t.b.c.), so a big thank you to everyone who sponsored them. All enjoyed the jump ... 12,000 feet, 45 seconds of freefall and then about 3 and a half minutes of floating through the air. Thanks to all the staff at the North London Parachute Centre, who kept spirits high and made the group relax and enjoy their jump. They may have been too good though .. as all 5 jumpers have said they'll be doing it again:)

Don't look at me .. you all agreed to the jump!

Lisa gets to go first ... whilst the rest of us head to the pub!

And Jeremy thinks he's Biggles!

Happy 1st Anniversary & Happy 50th birthday Paul
(14/01/07)
Calm Down ...

Check out last nights fun and frolics at the Jolly. Paul's surprise 50th birthday party coincided with the 1st anniversary for Paul and Heather in the pub. Combined with the fact that Paul is an avid Liverpool fan, it was only natural to provide the party goers with a commemorative T-shirt, scouse wig and moustache to wear! A big thanks to Lee and his team at Printed Clothing in St Albans for doing a grand job of the t shirts .... I think there'll be an order for a 2nd anniversary t shirt same time next year.

Mission Impossible? Your mission if you choose to accept it, is to send us photos of you wearing your exclusive Jolly Sailor T-shirt somewhere distinguishable in the UK or the World .... the Taj Majhal maybe (the real thing, not the curry house) or even Brighton pier! Drop us an .

Young Arsenal Player in the Jolly

Jolly Spooky night

Halloween Party 28/10/06
A fun night was had by all on Saturday at the Jolly Sailor, but who was the scariest punter ..... ?

Saturday Nights Alright for fighting (23/10/06)
Conker Fight 14/10/06

It was the landlords who took centre stage for the first conker match of the evening. Despite Heather not being able to hit Pauls conker, she won as Pauls conker dropped to the floor!
Everyone in the pub joined in with the fight - regulars and newcomers alike, with some getting the hang of it more than others ... no names mentioned. But it was clear who had the misspent youth in the playground ... Colin and Vic in particular definately knew how to handle their conkers. Kat was perhaps the most inexperienced conker player and squeeled everytime Jeremys conker plunged towards her. Probably the longest game was between Richard and Mandy, who broke the 5min rule several times over, but nothing was said as Mandy was having so
much fun with Richards conker..

And so to the final, which was inevitably battled out between Vic and Colin. With much cheering and encouragement from the onlookers, Vic emerged as a clear winner, when Colin's conkers fell to the ground split in 2. Vic is now the proud owner of the award and title of 'Jolly Sailor Conker Fight Winner 2006'. Get practising, because the event of the year will return next year.

Jolly Sailor Golf Day ... Part 2

Despite the torrential rain and gale force winds, 18 people turned out at Mill Green for 12:30 tee off. For most it was the 1st time at this course and a very testing course it turned out to be. The weather was fine drizzle, which turned into heavy downpours. This however subsided mid afternoon and allowed the sun to breakthrough. We played a yellow ball competition for the first time. No team managed to get round with their ball. In fact, one team didn't even get past the first tee.
Paul managed to do a John and send his club soaring into the air on the 2nd hole.
Mark won worst trousers award and is owed a beer at The Jolly Sailor.
The ongoing competition between the Steve / Will and Paul / Lee partnership was won by Steve and Will ..... again! But with Will losing the yellow ball, it meant shouting honours where even.
The day was won by Russell the bandit with a silly score of 45 points. Nearest the pin was Geoff, who managed to get inside Will’s great shot on the 18th. Longest Drive was won by Paul.
All had a great day, which continued into the night. Great to see all the players staying and mixing together.

All looks well for the Jolly Sailor Golf Society and we are now ready to take it to the next level. With this is mind, there will be an AGM on Wednesday, 15th November at the Jolly sailor, when officers will be elected, society rules discussed and the direction of the club decided.

Jolly good 0-0
St Albans City FC vs Forest Green Rovers

The Jolly Sailor sponsored the match ball at the conference match on Tuesday (4 Oct) between St Albans City FC and Forest Green Rovers. Despite a disappointing 0-0 result, the match had its moments! Probably the most amusing moment came from the Forest Green Rovers manager. During a promising break, one of the strikers broke forward and words of encouragement echoed around Clarence Parks 'Shoot you t**t'!
Further match info can be found on the Saints website. And don't forget to admire the match ball behind the bar at the Jolly.

A Jolly Good Time in Munich

Landlord Visits Oktoberfest

Unless you've been there before, it's hard to imagine the vast size of the famous Oktoberfest in Munich.
The word 'tent' is more than a slight understatement and a 'funfair' is also a loose term (see pics below). The world's biggest Beer Festival takes place each year for 2 weeks. It always finishes on the first Sunday in October, hence the confusion that much of the festival actually takes place in September!

The trip to Munich also involved an outing to a small football stadium, namely the Allianz Arena, where Bayern Munich only just scraped a 2 - 1 win against 1. Bundesliga newcomers Alemania Aachen.

If you like beer and a good time, then the Munich Oktoberfest is not to be missed. With enough interest, there may well be Jolly Sailor outing to Germany next September ... watch this space.

80's Night at the jolly

27th August '06

Bank Holiday Sunday was a celebration of the 80's. Music ranged from Toni Basil and Tight Fit to Altered Images and The Damned. The cocktails flowed ... Seamans Delight, Jolly Roger, Sea Storm, Captains Fantasy and Jolly Climax, not forgetting lots of Sex in the Jolly. Even Dennis was seen enjoying a Jolly Roger ....

Oh, go on then I'll have another one .....

Jolly 80's Girls

I like having Sex in the Jolly!

Er, am I a material girl .. or like a virgin?

A secret camera managed to capture our very own 'I only drink Brown & Bitter' Dennis enjoying a Jolly Roger on Sunday night.

Dr Pepper once again makes an appearance.

Night Night !

Jolly Sailor Golf Day
4th August '06

The venue was Batchwood Golf Course and twenty turned up for the re-opening of the Jolly Sailors golf society. The society was formed in 1995 and last played in 2000.

Zoe, who was official press photographer and completed the whole course with the last party, added to the event.
Mark (Harrison) won the ‘Worst Trousers’ competition, despite knowing nothing about it.

Tee time was 2pm but backlog of earlier society’s meant we didn’t tee of until nearly 2:30pm.

Paul (Chief) announced everyone on to the 1st tee, which gave the group the chance to have a bit of fun … most of which was aimed at Michael (Sonnabend) because of his German name!

Russell was soon nicknamed the B&Q and Tango man because of his loud orange outfit. These nicknames were to change toward the end of the day to ‘Gringo’ and ‘Bandit’.

John (Smith) let his club go on the 3rd tee and it ended in the trees behind him .. think it was a 3 iron.

Youngest player on the day was Reece (Egerton) who played really well but must have been tired carrying his partner (Dean Bozier).

Will (Dixon) and Lee (Bozier) had altercations with people behind who where firing balls past them. Paul and Will seem to attract trouble up at Batchwood!

Who's This?

A very long day but most enjoyable with a great buffet put on by Lisa at the Jolly.

Overall winner was Matt (Parfitt) who left his trophy with Steve (Ellis) and strolled off with his arm around another trophy.

2nd was Russell (Frost) who also won longest drive and nearest pin hence the bandit name.

3rd was Mark (Harrison)

A success all round and hopefully another event will take place at the end of September.

Men vs Women Netball Match

23 July '06

A fun morning was had by all, but somehow the men managed to beat the women 16 - 11.

Gill was an extremely brave umpire, taking constant abuse and heckling from the men, but she managed to keep her cool and keep everyone in control. A big thanks goes out to Gill!
Vic had an interesting quarter marking daughter Vicky, at one stage it could have been an epsiode of WWE, as both were on the floor.
Vicky and Lisa made a good shooting partnership, with Zoe helping them for a quarter and getting bashed about in the process.
Huw, Andy and Jeremy all played a role in defence, Andy spent lots of time trying to cuddle Lisa, Hugh did some good defending .. when he worked out there had to be a gap between him and his opponent, and Jeremy made some good interceptions and enjoyed slapping the ball, thin air or anything that got in the way.
For the men, Reece, Richard and Paul took turns to shoot. Richard, despite being nearly as tall as the net, found it difficult putting the ball through it, but luckily he had Reece on hand to do the job for him. Niki and Tricia did some sterling defending and managed to keep their cool under some rough handling by their opposition.
The centre court action was extremely frantic, Steve was everywhere and so was his voice, but fair play to him, he and Paul definately got the men up for the fight.
Gareth marked like a barnacle, although he forgot to stop when his opponent did. Paul and Heather played an interesting quarter against each other with lots of contact, tantrums and pushing going on.
Cath, Becky, Bobbie and Zoe held their own in the centre court and didn't get riled by the shouting and grief they were getting from the opponents. Cath managed to get away with a blatant punch on Steve, although I think one of the umpires may have joined in too (no names mentioned),

But at the end of the day, there was no blood or tears (just a few bruises), and everyone had a fun morning .. although the women will get their revenge in the not too distant future.
A big thanks also goes out to the cracking supporters ... Tricia, Nicola, Fiona, Brian, Brando, Glyn, Phil & son etc etc.
And last but not least, we mustn't forget to thank Zoe for organising the court and bringing the oranges and giving some pre match training to the men,

Who's up for tenpin bowling next??

Finally, we have a little competition for you ... 'Guess the Caption'? Winner of the best caption wins a special Jolly Sailor prize! Email your humerous captions to us at: netball@thejollysailorpub.co.uk
